Well costs in seconds, not days

WellOptima AI turns a drilling-cost planning spreadsheet into a live web app that estimates well cost and duration in real time, and tracks actuals against plan.

The problem

Well cost planning lived in a large engineering workbook. It was accurate, but a new scenario took days of manual work, and comparing plan against what was actually happening on the rig meant another spreadsheet.

What we did

  1. Ported the workbook’s calculation engine to code one-to-one, then verified it against the workbook until the totals matched exactly.

  2. Designed the interface around one chart with four modes — depth–time, depth–cost, time + cost and trajectory — with phase bands, casing shoes and a zoom brush.

  3. Added live real-time drilling feeds as an “actual” curve over the plan, so drift shows up while there is still time to act.

  4. Added the working tools engineers asked for: burn rate, cost per metre by section, side-by-side comparison of three configurations, and Excel export.

A studio perspective

Small things, decided well.
